A mysterious illness has struck Badhaal village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, claiming 17 lives since December 2024 and affecting a total of 38 individuals. The deaths, which occurred primarily in three interconnected families, prompted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order the formation of an inter-ministerial team to investigate the cause.

The disease manifests with symptoms such as fever, pain, nausea, and loss of consciousness. Patients succumbed within days of hospitalization, creating alarm in the remote mountain village, located 55 km from the town.

Speaking to reporters, Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha confirmed that the health department and other agencies had investigated but could not determine the exact cause. The inter-ministerial team arrived in Rajouri on Sunday to provide clarity and assistance.

Neurotoxins Suspected
Dr. A.S. Bhatia, principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri, disclosed that brain swelling, or edema, was a common condition among the deceased. Tests conducted at leading laboratories, including the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the National Institute of Virology in Pune, ruled out bacterial or viral infections. However, the presence of neurotoxins was confirmed in the samples analyzed.

What Are Neurotoxins?
Neurotoxins are toxic substances that impair the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. These toxins can interfere with nerve signal transmission, leading to symptoms ranging from muscle weakness and confusion to paralysis and respiratory failure.

Neurotoxins may be natural or synthetic. Natural sources include venom from animals such as snakes and spiders, as well as toxins from bacteria, algae, and plants. Synthetic neurotoxins include pesticides and industrial chemicals. Exposure can occur through ingestion, inhalation, skin contact, or injection.

The exact source of the neurotoxins in Badhaal village is still under investigation. Authorities are focusing on potential environmental, agricultural, or water contamination as possible origins.

Government Action and Next Steps
The central team is working alongside local health authorities to contain the crisis and ensure the safety of the village's residents. The Union Health Ministry has assured support, while toxicology experts continue to analyze environmental and food samples for further clues.

The situation highlights the urgent need for awareness, prompt action, and preventive measures to address such public health emergencies in rural regions.
