A groundbreaking new drug called Zepbound has been introduced to address sleep apnea, a condition often associated with irregular breathing during sleep. This drug, which is expected to help with weight loss, has garnered attention due to its dual benefits in managing sleep apnea and aiding in weight reduction. Zepbound has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and it is anticipated to be available in India by 2025, under the name Mounjaro.
Sleep apnea is a condition that affects millions, causing interruptions in breathing during sleep, leading to potential long-term health problems. Obesity is a major contributing factor to this condition, and the introduction of Zepbound is a hopeful development for those struggling with both sleep apnea and obesity.
Currently, individuals with mild to severe sleep apnea use CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) and BI-PAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) devices as part of their treatment. However, Zepbound aims to provide an alternative by addressing the root cause — obesity — and helping individuals reduce body weight. This could potentially lead to a reduction in the severity of sleep apnea symptoms, improving overall sleep quality and reducing health risks.
Zepbound is expected to be especially beneficial for individuals who are overweight or obese. The drug works by promoting weight loss, which can ultimately alleviate some of the breathing difficulties associated with sleep apnea.
The drug will be marketed under the name Mounjaro in India after receiving all necessary approvals. However, the price of the drug has not yet been finalized. Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Zepbound, has stated that the pricing will be determined based on the drug's medical efficacy and its impact on managing Type 2 diabetes and obesity-related health issues.
An expert in sleep medicine mentioned, "One of the most effective treatments for sleep apnea is weight loss. This drug helps with weight reduction, thus improving breathing during sleep. It will surely be a game-changer, but we must wait to see its long-term effects."
In India, approximately 104 million people suffer from sleep apnea, with 47 million of them having moderate to severe cases. This new treatment is expected to have a significant impact on improving the quality of life for many affected individuals, offering hope for better management of this widespread condition.
The introduction of Zepbound/Mounjaro offers a promising solution for millions suffering from sleep apnea and obesity, marking an important milestone in the medical field's ongoing efforts to improve sleep and overall health.
