In West Bengal, local health authorities have been instructed to remain alert, strengthen hospital preparedness, and ensure that standard infection prevention protocols are followed.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has clarified that the Nipah virus situation in West Bengal is under control, following concerns raised due to heightened surveillance measures introduced by neighbouring countries. The ministry confirmed that only two Nipah virus cases have been reported in the state since December last year and that no additional infections have been detected so far.

According to official data shared by the National Centre for Disease Control, continuous monitoring and surveillance have not revealed any further spread of the virus. Health authorities have stated that all necessary containment and preventive measures are in place, and there is no cause for public alarm at this stage.

Despite the limited number of cases, some neighbouring countries have increased health vigilance as a precaution. Thailand has begun screening passengers arriving from India at three of its international airports that receive flights from West Bengal. The screening includes monitoring for symptoms and collecting travel history details to prevent potential cross border transmission.

Nepal has also stepped up health checks, introducing screening procedures at Kathmandu airport as well as at major land border crossings with India. Officials there have stated that the measures are precautionary and aimed at early detection, given the shared borders and frequent travel between the two countries.

The Health Ministry reiterated that Nipah virus disease is a zoonotic infection and that early detection, isolation, and contact tracing are critical in preventing outbreaks. In West Bengal, local health authorities have been instructed to remain alert, strengthen hospital preparedness, and ensure that standard infection prevention protocols are followed.

Medical experts have noted that the response mechanism put in place after previous Nipah outbreaks has helped India manage such situations more effectively. Surveillance systems, laboratory testing capacity, and coordination between state and central agencies have been strengthened over the years.

The ministry has also advised the public to rely only on official information and avoid spreading unverified reports. People have been urged to follow basic hygiene practices and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever or respiratory distress, especially if they have a relevant travel or exposure history.

At present, the Centre maintains that the situation in West Bengal is stable and under close watch. Authorities continue to engage with international health agencies and neighbouring countries to share information and best practices. The government has assured that any change in the situation will be communicated promptly, and necessary measures will be taken to safeguard public health.
