Aam Aadmi Party leader Gurpreet Singh, popularly known as Gopi, was shot dead in Mamdot in Punjab’s Ferozepur district on Saturday evening, August 29, 2026. The incident took place in the main market area and has triggered a police investigation into the identity and motive of the attackers.
According to police, Gurpreet Singh was travelling on a motorcycle along with his associate Harpreet Singh when four armed men travelling in a car allegedly followed them and opened fire. The attack left both men injured. Gurpreet sustained critical gunshot injuries and was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Harpreet Singh was also injured and was shifted for further medical treatment.
The shooting caused panic in the Mamdot area, with residents and other people present in the market reportedly rushing to safety after the gunfire. Police teams reached the location after receiving information about the incident and began collecting evidence from the area.
The victim, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, was associated with the Aam Aadmi Party. Reports have identified him as a 45 year old political worker who was active in local politics. His family also has a political background, with his father previously associated with the Congress, while his sister in law is an elected AAP councillor in the Mamdot Nagar Panchayat.
Police are investigating whether an old personal dispute and political rivalry connected with the recent municipal elections could have led to the attack. Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said the attackers had been identified and that multiple police teams had been formed to locate and arrest them.
Investigators are also examining the background of the suspected main accused. Police have indicated that the case may be connected to an earlier dispute between individuals involved in the incident. However, the exact motive will be established only after the investigation is completed.
Another person who was reportedly present at the time of the attack was Vicky Maini, the newly elected president of the Mamdot Nagar Panchayat and an AAP leader. According to reports, Maini escaped without injuries during the firing. His vehicle was also reportedly hit by bullets.
The attack has drawn attention because it involved a local political figure and took place less than a year before the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for February 2027. However, police have not established that the killing was politically motivated, and investigators are continuing to examine different possibilities.
Police have formed several teams to conduct searches and trace the suspects. Officials are also examining available evidence and gathering statements from people who were present in the area.
