The event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and global investors to discuss advancements and collaboration opportunities in the AI sector.

A total of 160 academicians from across the country have expressed strong criticism of the protest organised by the Indian Youth Congress at the AI Impact Summit held last week. In a collective statement, they described the demonstration as profoundly regrettable and ill conceived, arguing that it reflected a lack of judgment in distinguishing between democratic dissent and the need to safeguard national prestige at an international gathering.

The AI Impact Summit was organised to highlight India’s growing capabilities in artificial intelligence, digital innovation, and emerging technologies. The event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and global investors to discuss advancements and collaboration opportunities in the AI sector. According to organisers, the summit aimed to position India as a leading hub for technology driven growth and innovation.

The academicians stated that events of this scale provide an opportunity for India to present its achievements and strengthen international partnerships. They expressed concern that protests staged during such forums could send negative signals to global participants and investors. In their view, while democratic protest is an essential feature of India’s constitutional framework, the timing and context of such demonstrations are equally important.

The statement further noted that political disagreements and policy debates should be addressed through appropriate democratic channels. However, they argued that staging protests at international summits risks overshadowing the primary objective of promoting national development and technological progress. The signatories emphasised that India’s global standing depends not only on policy achievements but also on the manner in which it conducts itself during high profile engagements.

The Indian Youth Congress, the youth wing of the Indian National Congress, reportedly organised the protest to raise concerns related to policy issues. However, detailed reasons for the demonstration were not immediately available in public statements. The absence of an official response to the academicians’ criticism has added to the ongoing public debate.

Political observers note that India has increasingly positioned itself as a significant player in the field of artificial intelligence and digital governance. International conferences and summits are viewed as strategic platforms to attract investment, build research partnerships, and enhance the country’s reputation as a technology destination. Any disruption during such events is therefore subject to close scrutiny.

The issue has sparked wider discussion among political leaders, educators, and civil society members about balancing the right to protest with the responsibility of maintaining a positive international image. While dissent remains a cornerstone of democratic practice, many experts argue that its expression should not compromise national interests, particularly during globally attended forums.

As India continues to host major international events, the debate underscores the evolving relationship between domestic political expression and global engagement.

According to organisers, the summit aimed to position India as a leading hub for technology driven growth and innovation.
