The Congress party has raised concerns over the government’s economic planning ahead of the presentation of the Union Budget, criticising what it described as poor coordination in policy making. The opposition party questioned whether Budget figures would require early revisions, citing the scheduled release of new GDP and Consumer Price Index series shortly after the Budget is presented.
According to Congress leaders, presenting the Union Budget before the release of revised economic data raises questions about the accuracy and reliability of the estimates used in Budget calculations. They argued that the timing of the data releases reflects a lack of coordination between different government departments involved in economic planning and statistical analysis.
The Union Finance Minister is scheduled to present the Budget on February 1. However, the Congress pointed out that the updated GDP and CPI series, which play a crucial role in shaping fiscal projections, inflation estimates and growth forecasts, will be released soon after the Budget. The party said this could force the government to revise Budget figures earlier than expected, undermining confidence in the economic roadmap.
Congress leaders stated that sound economic policymaking requires alignment between statistical data and fiscal planning. They emphasised that major changes in data series should ideally be factored into Budget preparation rather than being released after key financial decisions are announced. The party warned that inconsistencies between Budget estimates and updated economic data could affect transparency and credibility.
The criticism comes at a time when the government is expected to focus on growth, inflation control, welfare spending and fiscal discipline in the upcoming Budget. The Congress said that without accurate and updated data, policy decisions may not reflect the real state of the economy, potentially impacting businesses, investors and citizens.
The ruling government has not yet responded directly to the Congress’s remarks. However, officials have previously stated that Budget estimates are based on the best available data at the time and that revisions are part of the normal fiscal process.
Political observers note that debates over data accuracy and policy coordination have become a recurring theme in Budget discussions in recent years. Opposition parties have frequently questioned the methodology and timing of economic indicators, while the government has defended its approach as transparent and in line with global practices.
As the Budget presentation approaches, attention will remain focused on how the government addresses economic challenges and whether it provides clarity on the use of revised data. The Congress has said it will closely examine the Budget to assess whether it reflects realistic assumptions and long-term economic planning.
The Union Budget is one of the most significant annual policy announcements and sets the direction for government spending, taxation and economic priorities. With differing views on data usage and coordination, the debate is expected to continue both inside and outside Parliament following the Budget presentation.
