As the US presidential election approaches, Indian policymakers are expected to monitor statements from leading American candidates closely and prepare contingency plans to protect India’s trade interests if policy changes become reality.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has sharply criticised former US President Donald Trump for his recent statements suggesting the imposition of an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian imports. Speaking to the media, Owaisi described Trump’s remarks as an attempt to exert unfair pressure on India and warned that such moves could damage longstanding diplomatic and trade ties between the two nations.

Trump, during a campaign rally, once again reiterated his view that countries like India were taking advantage of the United States through what he claimed were unbalanced trade practices. He pledged to impose stricter tariffs on imports from countries he believes are not offering fair terms to American businesses. India was specifically mentioned as one of the nations that would face higher import duties under his potential new administration.

In response, Owaisi called the remarks unwarranted and provocative. He criticised Trump’s rhetoric, stating that international relations should be governed by mutual respect and constructive dialogue, not by threats or unilateral actions. He added that India, being one of the world’s largest economies, must not remain silent in the face of such aggressive posturing from global political figures.

Owaisi also emphasised the need for the Indian government to issue a strong diplomatic response. He said that India must safeguard the interests of its exporters and manufacturers and should not allow foreign leaders to dictate terms without negotiation. He pointed out that any increase in tariffs could directly affect Indian industries, especially sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and technology services, which have significant exports to the United States.

Several political leaders across party lines have also echoed concerns about Trump’s comments. While some see it as part of the usual election-season rhetoric common in the United States, others believe it reflects a possible shift in trade policy should Trump regain office. Trade analysts have warned that increased tariffs could disrupt supply chains and lead to economic uncertainty in key sectors.

India and the United States have maintained a complex but evolving trade relationship. In recent years, both nations have made efforts to resolve differences through bilateral negotiations and trade agreements. However, recurring issues such as tariffs, market access, and digital taxation continue to be areas of friction.

Owaisi’s reaction has brought further attention to the importance of trade diplomacy in India’s foreign policy approach. He urged citizens and political leaders alike to remain alert and united on issues that impact the country’s economic sovereignty. He concluded by saying that India must be prepared to protect its economic interests while continuing to promote fair and balanced trade partnerships with all nations.
