Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has strongly opposed the government's proposal for 'One Nation, One Election' and has called for the immediate dissolution of the government and the holding of fresh elections. Yadav’s statement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated push for the nationwide electoral reform.
In a scathing attack, Yadav accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to implement the proposal for political gain rather than national benefit. He said that the move is an attempt to prolong the BJP's hold on power and undermine the democratic process. Yadav further stated that the country's democracy is too important to be altered for short-term political advantages.
The Samajwadi Party leader’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions and debates on the feasibility and implications of holding simultaneous elections in the country. While some view it as a way to streamline the electoral process, others, like Yadav, have expressed concerns over its potential to centralize power and disrupt the federal structure.
Yadav’s challenge to PM Modi has fueled further political discourse, with opposition leaders calling it a direct challenge to the current government's intentions. The proposal of 'One Nation, One Election' is expected to be a key point of discussion in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.
