Bharatiya Janata Party national president Nitin Nabin is scheduled to undertake a two-day visit to Uttarakhand on September 9 and 10, with organisational meetings planned in Haldwani and Rudrapur. The visit comes at a politically significant time for the state, with the BJP focusing on strengthening its organisation and assessing preparations for upcoming electoral challenges.
According to reports, Nabin will reach Haldwani on September 9 and participate in a series of party programmes and meetings. He is expected to interact with senior party leaders, office-bearers and workers as part of the BJP’s organisational review. On September 10, his programme will include activities in Rudrapur. Reports also indicate that a meeting of the Uttarakhand BJP State Working Committee is part of the visit.
The visit is taking place against the backdrop of the ongoing political controversy surrounding the alleged purification ritual at Haldwani’s Ramlila Ground. The controversy began after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public meeting at the venue on August 8. A purification ritual was subsequently held at the ground, prompting Congress leaders to allege that the incident had caste-related implications.
Congress has strongly objected to the episode and demanded action against those responsible. Kharge recently wrote to BJP leader J P Nadda, urging him to ensure that the Uttarakhand government takes action and registers a First Information Report in connection with the incident. Kharge has also referred to the issue in Parliament and criticised the absence of action following earlier assurances.
The BJP, however, has rejected the Congress interpretation of the incident. BJP leaders have described the allegations as politically motivated and have disputed the claim that the ritual was connected to caste discrimination. Organisers of the ritual have also rejected the caste angle, saying the event was conducted because of the condition of the venue rather than because of the identity of the person who had addressed the gathering.
The controversy has expanded beyond the original incident, with both the BJP and Congress exchanging allegations and political statements. Congress has announced further protests seeking action from the Uttarakhand government, while the BJP has continued to challenge the Congress version of events. The issue has also received attention because of an FIR registered against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with remarks concerning the controversy.
Against this backdrop, Nabin’s visit is expected to have an important organisational dimension. The party has been seeking a formal investigation and legal action. For the BJP, the priority has been to counter what it describes as an attempt to turn the incident into a political controversy.
The competing positions are likely to continue generating political debate in Uttarakhand. Nabin’s meetings with state leaders and party workers could provide the BJP with an opportunity to communicate its organisational priorities and evaluate the political situation on the ground.
