Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured that southern states will experience an increase in both Lok Sabha seats and overall political influence under the central government’s proposed plan to expand the lower house of Parliament.
Addressing concerns raised by various political leaders, Amit Shah stated that the proposed expansion of the Lok Sabha to 816 seats is aimed at enhancing representation across all regions of the country. He emphasized that southern states such as Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala will not lose their current representation but will instead see an increase in the number of seats allocated to them.
The assurance comes amid ongoing discussions around the delimitation process, which involves redrawing the boundaries of parliamentary constituencies based on population and other factors. Several southern states had earlier expressed concerns that population based adjustments might reduce their relative share of seats in Parliament. Responding to these concerns, Shah clarified that the government is working on a framework that ensures equitable growth in representation without disadvantaging any region.
He highlighted that the expansion of the Lok Sabha is being considered as a practical solution to accommodate population growth while maintaining balance among states. According to the proposal, increasing the total number of seats would allow for greater representation without requiring any state to lose its existing share.
In addition to addressing delimitation, Amit Shah also spoke about the issue of reservation in the context of women representation. He clarified that reservation based on religion, specifically for Muslim women, is not in line with constitutional provisions. He stated that any reservation policy must adhere to the principles laid out in the Constitution and should not be based on religious identity.
The government has recently introduced bills related to both delimitation and women reservation, aiming to bring structural changes to India’s electoral system. The women reservation proposal seeks to provide 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, which is expected to significantly increase female participation in governance.
