Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for a focused effort to make Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) more viable and transparent. Speaking at a recent event, Shah emphasized the critical role of PACS in strengthening the agricultural sector and promoting financial inclusion, particularly in rural areas. He noted that these local financial institutions are essential for providing accessible credit and other financial services to farmers, thereby boosting rural economies.
Shah highlighted that improving the viability of PACS is vital to ensuring they can meet the evolving financial needs of farmers. He urged authorities to streamline operations, adopt modern technologies, and enhance transparency in PACS management to prevent mismanagement and corruption. The government, he said, is committed to supporting PACS through financial reforms and capacity-building initiatives.
The Minister also pointed out that PACS can play a pivotal role in advancing the government’s vision of doubling farmers’ income by providing timely and affordable credit, along with offering other services such as insurance and pension schemes. He stressed the importance of ensuring these societies operate with the highest level of accountability to gain the trust of farmers and improve their financial standing.
Amit Shah's comments come as part of the government's broader initiative to strengthen rural financial institutions and make them more resilient. Efforts to improve PACS will contribute to better credit flow, reduce dependency on informal lenders, and ultimately enhance the livelihood of India’s farming community.
This call for reform in PACS operations aligns with the government's ongoing push for rural development, with an emphasis on agricultural sustainability and farmer welfare. As the sector faces increasing challenges, strengthening PACS could prove to be a key strategy in supporting India's farmers and ensuring a more robust rural economy.
