Union Home Minister Amit Shah has strongly advocated for the adoption of a sustainable and circular economy in India’s dairy sector, calling it essential for improving farmer welfare and strengthening the rural economy. Speaking at a national dairy industry conference, Shah outlined the government's vision for transforming dairy into an eco-conscious and economically resilient sector.
In his address, Shah emphasized that the Indian dairy sector, being the largest in the world by production, has vast untapped potential. However, he noted that to maintain long-term growth, the industry must shift from traditional practices to modern, sustainable systems. “We need to promote a circular economy where waste is minimized, and every part of the production cycle is used efficiently,” Shah said.
He explained that a circular dairy economy involves practices such as converting dairy waste into bioenergy or organic fertilizer, efficient water use, and integrating livestock farming with renewable energy systems. Such practices not only ensure environmental sustainability but also increase the profitability of dairy operations by reducing input costs and diversifying revenue sources.
Amit Shah also pointed out that the dairy sector contributes significantly to India’s rural economy, especially for small and marginal farmers. “More than 80% of India’s dairy farmers are smallholders. A sustainable dairy model will directly benefit them by enhancing productivity and income,” he said. He further mentioned that women's participation in dairy is crucial, and empowering them through training and cooperatives will strengthen the entire value chain.
The Home Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the dairy industry through various initiatives. These include increasing investment in cold chain infrastructure, improving veterinary services, ensuring quality feed supply, and expanding the reach of dairy cooperatives. He urged state governments and private players to collaborate in promoting environmentally friendly innovations in dairy processing and distribution.
Shah also emphasized the role of research and technology in achieving sustainability. He called for partnerships with agricultural universities and private institutions to develop and adopt green technologies such as methane capture systems, automated feeding techniques, and climate-resilient livestock breeds.
The event was attended by key stakeholders in the dairy industry, including government officials, dairy cooperative leaders, farmers, and researchers. Several panel discussions were held on the future of dairy, sustainable practices, and inclusive growth strategies.
Amit Shah’s call for a circular dairy economy aligns with India’s broader commitment to sustainable development goals and environmental responsibility. As the country continues to modernize its agricultural sectors, dairy remains a critical area for innovation, job creation, and rural empowerment.
The message was clear—India’s dairy sector must evolve with sustainability at its core. The government is prepared to provide both policy and financial support, but lasting change will require active participation from all stakeholders, including farmers, industry leaders, and consumers.
