Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has called on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to implement the newly launched Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana across all states it governs, stating that the scheme will provide financial assistance to temple priests and religious leaders. The scheme, which promises a monthly stipend for priests, granthis (Sikh temple leaders), and other religious figures, was introduced by the Delhi government in an effort to acknowledge their contribution to society.
During a public address, Kejriwal questioned why the BJP, which rules over 20 states, had not adopted similar welfare measures for religious leaders in their states. "You have 20 states under your control. Why don’t you implement this scheme in your states and prove that you are truly committed to the welfare of religious leaders?" Kejriwal remarked, challenging the ruling party to extend the benefits of the Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana to the religious communities across the country.
The Delhi government's scheme is designed to provide monthly financial aid to priests, granthis, and other religious workers, ensuring they receive recognition for their spiritual and community services. The initiative aims to offer financial stability to these individuals, many of whom work in religious institutions that often operate with limited resources.
In his challenge to the BJP, Kejriwal emphasized that the scheme was not just a political gesture but a genuine effort to uplift those who serve religious communities. He also stated that the Delhi government would continue to support the welfare of religious workers through various initiatives.
The BJP, on the other hand, has not yet responded directly to Kejriwal's challenge. However, party officials have praised the scheme as a well-intentioned initiative, with some questioning the feasibility of implementing it at a national level without coordination with state governments.
The call for nationwide implementation comes as Kejriwal positions the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a pro-religious welfare party, aiming to expand its influence across India. This challenge has the potential to fuel political debates, with the AAP pushing for more schemes aimed at benefiting religious leaders, while the BJP may seek to highlight their own welfare initiatives and counter any criticism.
As this political tussle continues, the Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana has emerged as a key talking point, with both parties attempting to showcase their commitment to the welfare of religious communities. The ongoing debate is expected to resonate with voters ahead of state and national elections, influencing political strategies in the coming months.
