Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has called for the implementation of stringent laws to curb the spread of "vulgar" and inappropriate content on Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms and social media.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has called for the implementation of stringent laws to curb the spread of "vulgar" and inappropriate content on Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms and social media. In a statement, Vaishnaw highlighted the growing concerns over the impact of explicit content on these platforms, especially in the context of its influence on younger audiences.

Vaishnaw, who is responsible for overseeing the country’s digital infrastructure, emphasized that while the digital revolution has brought numerous benefits, there is a pressing need to establish a more robust framework for regulating online content. He expressed concerns that the current self-regulatory mechanisms employed by OTT platforms and social media services are insufficient in controlling the proliferation of harmful content.

The Minister suggested that the government would soon take more decisive action to ensure that platforms are held accountable for the content they host. His comments are in line with recent efforts by the Indian government to tighten oversight over the growing OTT sector, which has faced criticism for hosting content deemed offensive or inappropriate by various sections of society.

Vaishnaw’s remarks have sparked a broader debate on the balance between freedom of expression and the regulation of harmful content online. While some support the idea of stronger laws to protect societal values, others argue that such measures could infringe upon the right to free speech and creativity.

The call for action comes at a time when concerns around the content displayed on OTT platforms have reached a new peak, particularly regarding shows and films that have faced backlash for explicit language, nudity, or controversial themes. The government is expected to introduce more concrete steps to ensure that platforms comply with content standards in the near future.
