The Assam Cabinet has approved the report submitted by the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the proposal to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities in the state. This decision marks a significant step toward extending constitutional recognition and related benefits to communities seeking formal inclusion under the ST category.
The GoM was tasked with examining requests and assessing socio-economic conditions, cultural identity, and historical evidence of the communities aspiring for ST status. After thorough deliberation, the GoM recommended the inclusion of six communities, citing the need to ensure equitable access to welfare schemes, reserved educational opportunities, and employment quotas.
Cabinet officials stated that the move is intended to provide these communities with social and economic upliftment, including political representation in local governance and access to development programs. “Granting ST status is expected to address historical disadvantages and empower these communities in Assam,” an official said.
The next step involves forwarding the GoM report to the state government, which will then submit it to the Union government for consideration and approval. Inclusion under the ST category requires central government sanction, following recommendations by the Registrar General of India and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
The six communities under consideration have long campaigned for ST recognition, arguing that their traditional practices, socio-economic status, and cultural identity warrant inclusion. Social activists and political representatives have highlighted that formal recognition will allow these communities to benefit from reserved seats in education and employment, as well as access to various government schemes and development programs.
The Assam Cabinet’s approval has been welcomed by community leaders, who view it as a long-awaited step toward equality and empowerment. Analysts note that granting ST status can also strengthen the state’s efforts in preserving cultural heritage and promoting inclusive development.
While the approval of the GoM report is a crucial milestone, legal and procedural steps remain before formal inclusion is achieved. The proposal will undergo scrutiny at multiple levels, including consultation with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and approval by the President of India. Once sanctioned, the affected communities will officially gain ST status, making them eligible for government schemes, political representation, and other benefits outlined under the Constitution.
The Assam government has emphasised that the process will be implemented with transparency and in accordance with constitutional provisions. Authorities are also expected to conduct awareness campaigns to inform the communities about the rights and benefits associated with the ST category.
Overall, the Cabinet’s approval of the GoM report reflects the state government’s commitment to social justice and inclusive development, ensuring that historically marginalised communities in Assam receive formal recognition and the opportunity to benefit from government programs.
