Assam Opposition Leader Writes to CJI Alleging Irregularities in Voter List Revision

Saikia said many people are unaware of the documentation required or the procedures to retain their names on the voter list.

Assam Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia has approached the Chief Justice of India, expressing serious concerns over the manner in which electoral roll revisions are being conducted in the state. In a detailed letter, Saikia alleged that the special revision of voter lists is being misused, potentially leading to the exclusion of eligible voters from the democratic process.

According to Saikia, the revision exercise has created fear among certain sections of society, particularly the Miya community. He claimed that the process appears selective and has resulted in individuals being asked to repeatedly prove their eligibility, even when their names were previously included in the voter list. The Opposition leader described this as a deliberate attempt to intimidate voters and discourage their participation in elections.

Saikia stated that free and fair elections depend on an inclusive and transparent electoral process. He warned that any action that results in large scale disenfranchisement would violate the constitutional rights guaranteed to citizens under the Indian Constitution. He urged the judiciary to take note of the issue and ensure that the revision exercise follows established legal and constitutional safeguards.

The letter reportedly highlights concerns that the special revision process is being implemented without adequate awareness among voters. Saikia said many people are unaware of the documentation required or the procedures to retain their names on the voter list. He added that this lack of clarity could lead to genuine voters losing their right to vote.

The Opposition leader also questioned the timing and urgency of the revision exercise. He argued that such large scale revisions should be conducted with proper planning, transparency, and sufficient time for public response. Any deviation from this, he said, could impact public trust in the electoral system.

Political observers note that voter list revisions have been a sensitive issue in Assam due to the state’s complex demographic and historical background. Electoral roll updates are routinely conducted by the Election Commission to remove duplicate entries and ensure accuracy. However, allegations of selective targeting have often sparked political debate.

The Election Commission has maintained that all revisions are carried out according to established procedures and are aimed at ensuring clean electoral rolls. Officials have stated in the past that adequate opportunities are provided for claims and objections during the revision period.

Saikia, however, has called for judicial oversight to prevent what he described as misuse of administrative power. He stressed that democracy thrives only when every eligible citizen is able to exercise their right to vote without fear or discrimination.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Chief Justice of India or the Election Commission regarding the letter. Political developments around the issue are being closely watched, especially with upcoming electoral processes in the state.
