Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed surprise and confusion over an invitation extended by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad for his inclusion in the opposition-led INDIA alliance. Responding to Lalu’s statement, Kumar asked, “Kya bol rahe hain?” (What are you saying?), signaling his skepticism over the development.
The remark comes amid growing speculation about the political dynamics within the ruling alliance in Bihar. Lalu Prasad, who has been a key figure in the opposition’s attempts to unite against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), recently invited Kumar to join the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties that is gaining momentum ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Nitish Kumar, who leads the Janata Dal (United) party, has been a pivotal political figure in Bihar’s state politics but has often shifted alliances between the BJP and the opposition. His questioning of Lalu’s statement has raised eyebrows, particularly as both leaders are considered to be major players in Bihar’s political landscape.
The INDIA alliance, which aims to challenge the BJP’s dominance in the upcoming elections, has seen some friction among its members over leadership and strategy. While Nitish Kumar had previously left the NDA to join hands with Lalu’s RJD and the Congress, his position within the opposition bloc appears to be uncertain, especially with this latest reaction.
Sources close to Kumar suggest that he may have reservations about the leadership structure of the INDIA alliance, which could be contributing to his response. Kumar's response, though light-hearted, underscores the ongoing power struggles within Bihar's political scene and the larger national opposition coalition.
