According to BJP leaders, Gandhi’s remarks inside and outside Parliament, along with his approach to debates, have not matched the decorum expected from someone holding such a key constitutional position.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has leveled fresh criticism at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of continuously lowering the dignity of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) post in the Lok Sabha. According to BJP leaders, Gandhi’s remarks inside and outside Parliament, along with his approach to debates, have not matched the decorum expected from someone holding such a key constitutional position.

The attack comes as tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress remain at a peak. With Rahul Gandhi recently taking over as the Leader of Opposition, the BJP has sharpened its focus on his conduct, alleging that he uses the platform more for political posturing than for meaningful discussion. BJP spokespersons argued that instead of presenting alternative policies and constructive criticism, Gandhi often resorts to rhetoric that undermines the seriousness of parliamentary proceedings.

BJP leaders also highlighted specific instances in which they claim Rahul Gandhi’s comments were disrespectful or provocative. They stressed that the LoP position carries not just symbolic weight but also plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability of the government. By failing to uphold this responsibility, the BJP claimed, Gandhi is not serving the larger interest of the democratic process.

Parliamentary watchers note that the criticism reflects the ruling party’s broader strategy of questioning the opposition’s credibility. The Congress, on the other hand, has defended Rahul Gandhi, arguing that as LoP he has every right to question the government on issues of national importance, from unemployment to rising prices. According to Congress leaders, the BJP’s charges are an attempt to silence criticism and avoid tough questions in Parliament.

The confrontation highlights the sharp divide between the two major national parties. While the BJP portrays Gandhi as inexperienced and unfit for leadership, Congress frames him as a leader unafraid to challenge the government on critical issues. This political tug-of-war has added to the charged atmosphere in Parliament, where debates are increasingly marked by heated exchanges and walkouts.

Political analysts believe that the LoP role, occupied after a gap of several years, will remain a focal point of contestation in the months ahead. The position grants Gandhi the opportunity to strengthen the opposition’s voice, but it also exposes him to greater scrutiny from the ruling party. For the BJP, keeping Gandhi on the defensive helps consolidate its narrative ahead of upcoming elections.

As the political discourse intensifies, the debate over the dignity of the LoP role underscores the larger challenge of maintaining parliamentary decorum in an era of sharp polarization. Observers suggest that both the government and the opposition need to strike a balance between criticism and constructive engagement to preserve the credibility of India’s democratic institutions.

By failing to uphold this responsibility, the BJP claimed, Gandhi is not serving the larger interest of the democratic process.
