The Congress, on the other hand, maintains that the allegations are politically motivated and aimed at maligning the party’s leadership.

The National Herald case has once again taken centre stage in Indian politics as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) renewed its criticism of Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Addressing media and public gatherings, BJP leaders accused the Gandhi family of converting the historic National Herald newspaper into a tool for personal enrichment and financial gain.

BJP spokespersons alleged that the Congress party, instead of preserving the legacy of the publication, transformed it into a "private limited company" controlled by the Gandhi family. BJP further described the setup as an "ATM" used to fund personal and political interests.

The National Herald newspaper was established by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and holds a prominent place in the nation’s freedom movement history. However, in recent years, it has been mired in controversy. The case centres around the transfer of ownership of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the publisher of National Herald, to a newly formed company, Young Indian, in which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are major stakeholders.

According to the BJP, the Congress party gave loans worth over ₹90 crore to AJL, which was later taken over by Young Indian for a fraction of the value. BJP alleges that this transaction was not only unethical but also an abuse of public funds, as Congress reportedly used party resources for the deal.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been investigating the case under money laundering charges. Both Sonia and Rahul Gandhi have been summoned and questioned by the ED in connection with the case. The Congress, on the other hand, maintains that the allegations are politically motivated and aimed at maligning the party’s leadership.

In response to BJP’s fresh attack, Congress leaders reiterated that the National Herald case has no substance and accused the BJP of using central agencies to silence opposition voices. They pointed out that similar tactics have been used against leaders from other opposition parties as well.

Political analysts believe that this issue will continue to be a flashpoint in the ongoing tussle between India’s two major political parties. With general elections approaching, both parties are expected to leverage the controversy to rally their respective voter bases.

As the legal proceedings continue, the public discourse around the National Herald case is likely to remain a key narrative in national politics, highlighting the larger theme of political accountability and the role of investigative agencies in democratic governance.
