BJP Criticised in Maharashtra Over Pigeon Feeding Controversy in Mumbai

Despite repeated complaints and awareness campaigns, many areas in Mumbai continue to witness widespread pigeon feeding, often near temples and housing complexes.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra has come under political and public criticism over an ongoing civic issue involving the feeding of pigeons in public spaces across Mumbai. Opposition parties and civic activists have raised concerns about the health and hygiene problems caused by the increasing pigeon population in the city, particularly in densely populated residential and religious areas.

The controversy began when residents and health experts flagged the rise in pigeon-related health issues, such as respiratory infections caused by pigeon droppings. Despite repeated complaints and awareness campaigns, many areas in Mumbai continue to witness widespread pigeon feeding, often near temples and housing complexes. Critics have accused the ruling party and municipal authorities of failing to take effective steps to regulate the practice.

Opposition leaders, including members of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress, have targeted the BJP-led administration, claiming it is turning a blind eye to public health risks. They allege that the party’s inaction on this issue reflects poor civic governance and a lack of seriousness in addressing urban health concerns. Political leaders have further pointed out that unregulated feeding has contributed to increased pollution and nuisance for residents in multiple wards of the city.

Local health officials have acknowledged that pigeon-related health risks are real and growing. Diseases such as hypersensitivity pneumonitis, commonly known as pigeon lung disease, are being reported with more frequency in areas where birds gather in large numbers. Medical professionals have advised against feeding pigeons in public areas, recommending that the practice be regulated to ensure it does not become a public health hazard.

Despite this, some BJP leaders have defended the practice, citing cultural and religious sentiments attached to feeding birds. They argue that any regulation should respect the traditional values of citizens while balancing public health needs. This statement has sparked further debate, with critics accusing the party of prioritising sentiment over science and public welfare.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is responsible for implementing civic regulations in Mumbai, has said it is reviewing the situation and may introduce new guidelines soon. A few wards have already started installing signboards discouraging pigeon feeding in certain areas, especially around hospitals, schools, and high-density residential zones. However, enforcement remains limited and inconsistent.

Civic activists have also suggested awareness drives, fines for illegal feeding, and designated feeding zones to manage the issue more effectively. They believe that a combination of public education and regulation is needed to strike a balance between compassion for animals and the need for a clean and safe environment.

In summary, the BJP faces growing pressure in Maharashtra to take a clear stand on the pigeon feeding issue in Mumbai. As public awareness and health concerns mount, the party and civic authorities may be forced to act decisively to protect both public welfare and urban cleanliness in the city.
