The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Priyank Kharge following his controversial remark about the possibility of banning the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The BJP called his statement undemocratic and reminiscent of the Emergency-era politics of 1975, drawing comparisons with the past restrictions on political and ideological freedom.
Speaking to the media, BJP leaders labeled Priyank Kharge as “mini Kharge,” referring to his father and Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge. They accused him of promoting outdated ideas rooted in political suppression and warned that such rhetoric could not be tolerated in a democratic setup. The BJP emphasized that targeting an organization like the RSS, which has a long-standing presence in Indian civil society, shows the Congress party's inability to accept ideological diversity.
Priyank Kharge’s statement suggesting a ban on the RSS sparked strong reactions across the political spectrum. He claimed that the activities of the RSS were harmful to national unity and implied that legal action, including a possible ban, should be considered. The BJP dismissed these remarks as irresponsible and politically motivated, arguing that such suggestions were disconnected from ground realities and constitutional principles.
BJP spokespersons pointed out that the RSS has been a registered and lawful organization for decades, contributing to various social and cultural causes across the country. They stated that attacking the RSS was a deliberate attempt by Congress leaders to divert attention from their own internal issues and declining political influence. According to the BJP, such statements are part of a broader strategy to polarize public opinion and revive outdated political narratives.
The ruling party also reminded the public of the historical context in which the RSS was banned during the Emergency in 1975, a move that faced widespread criticism both nationally and internationally. BJP leaders asserted that invoking similar measures today reflects an authoritarian mindset and a lack of respect for democratic institutions.
In response, Congress leaders defended Priyank Kharge's remarks by arguing that the concerns he raised were based on legitimate observations. They claimed that the RSS influences government policy and societal attitudes in ways that require closer scrutiny. However, the Congress party did not officially support the idea of a ban, distancing itself slightly from the controversy.
Political analysts noted that such exchanges are likely to intensify as the political atmosphere heats up ahead of upcoming elections. Issues related to ideology, freedom of expression, and institutional roles are expected to remain at the center of national debates. The war of words between the BJP and Congress over the RSS reflects the deepening ideological divide between the two major parties.
The BJP concluded its remarks by stating that democracy allows for disagreement but not for unconstitutional suggestions that threaten the freedom of legitimate organizations. They urged opposition leaders to engage in constructive dialogue rather than reviving divisive narratives from the past.
