New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lauded the central government for its continued focus on public welfare, citing the successful implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which has provided subsidised LPG connections to over 9 crore households across India. The party highlighted the scheme as a transformative initiative aimed at empowering women and improving public health by ensuring access to clean cooking fuel.
Addressing the media, BJP spokespersons stated that the LPG scheme reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development, especially in rural and economically weaker sections of society. The Ujjwala Yojana, launched in 2016, has since become one of the flagship welfare programmes under the Modi administration.
Party leaders emphasised that prior to the scheme, millions of women were forced to rely on firewood, coal, and other polluting fuels for cooking. This not only posed severe health hazards due to indoor air pollution but also consumed time and effort in collecting fuel. By replacing these with LPG cylinders, the government has significantly improved the quality of life for millions.
“The scheme has brought dignity, health, and ease of living to women, particularly in rural areas,” said a senior BJP official. “More than 9 crore families now have access to clean energy, which is a testament to our government’s dedication to inclusive governance.”
In addition to the Ujjwala Yojana, the BJP pointed to other welfare measures such as Ayushman Bharat, the PM Awas Yojana, and the free ration distribution scheme under the National Food Security Act as examples of the government’s broader welfare agenda.
The BJP credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the focused implementation of these schemes, stating that the direct benefit transfer model and digital tracking mechanisms have improved transparency and ensured benefits reach the intended recipients.
However, critics have raised concerns about refill affordability and sustainability of LPG usage among the poorest beneficiaries. In response, BJP leaders noted that the government has taken steps to provide subsidies on refills and continues to evaluate ways to support long-term adoption of clean fuels.
The party also reiterated its aim to expand welfare outreach and said that efforts are ongoing to ensure 100 percent saturation of eligible households under existing schemes.
With the general elections approaching, the BJP is expected to highlight its welfare record as a key campaign theme. The emphasis on schemes like the Ujjwala Yojana is part of a broader strategy to connect with grassroots voters, particularly women and rural families.
As the LPG scheme continues to grow, the focus will remain on addressing logistical challenges and ensuring that clean energy access becomes a permanent feature in every Indian household.
