Ensuring transparent electoral procedures and maintaining peace during campaigning and polling remain critical priorities.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dilip Ghosh has called for the deployment of central security forces to ensure peaceful and transparent elections in West Bengal. He argued that the prevailing political atmosphere in the state, marked by allegations of violence and tension during the Special Intensive Revision process of electoral rolls, makes the presence of central forces essential.

Ghosh stated that past elections in the state have witnessed incidents of clashes and intimidation, and therefore central intervention would help guarantee a level playing field for all political parties. He maintained that fair electoral practices are a cornerstone of democracy and that adequate security arrangements are necessary to uphold voter confidence.

The remarks come amid political debate over the Special Intensive Revision process conducted by the Election Commission of India. The revision exercise aims to update and verify voter lists ahead of upcoming elections. However, opposition parties in the state have raised concerns about potential irregularities and possible deletion of eligible voters from the electoral rolls.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier voiced apprehensions regarding the voter list revision. She warned that large scale deletions during the Special Intensive Revision could impact legitimate voters and affect the democratic process. Her comments added to the ongoing political tension between the ruling party in the state and the opposition.

In addition to concerns over voter roll revisions, Ghosh alleged that the state government denied permission for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s proposed Parivartan Yatra, despite reported approval from the court. The Parivartan Yatra was planned as a political outreach program aimed at mobilizing public support across various districts. According to the BJP leader, the denial of permission reflects political bias and restricts democratic activities.

The issue of security deployment has historically been a sensitive matter in West Bengal elections. Central forces are often requested to assist state police in maintaining law and order during polling. The Election Commission of India typically takes a final decision on the number and deployment pattern of such forces based on its assessment of the ground situation.

Political observers note that the demand for central forces is likely to intensify as the state approaches major electoral events. Both the ruling party and the opposition have been actively preparing for the upcoming polls, and allegations and counter allegations have shaped the political discourse.

As the situation develops, the Election Commission is expected to review security arrangements and address concerns raised by various stakeholders. Ensuring transparent electoral procedures and maintaining peace during campaigning and polling remain critical priorities. The coming weeks are likely to witness further political exchanges as parties continue to position themselves ahead of the elections in West Bengal.

He maintained that fair electoral practices are a cornerstone of democracy and that adequate security arrangements are necessary to uphold voter confidence.
