In a statement that has stirred political controversy, BJP West Bengal President and Member of Parliament Sukanta Majumdar has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of pursuing appeasement policies that, he claims, are leading to a situation where the Hindu population in the state is being sidelined. The BJP leader’s comments included a controversial comparison, alleging that Banerjee is "trying to turn Bengal into Bangladesh."
The remarks were made during a public interaction in Murshidabad, a district that has recently witnessed tensions following communal clashes. Majumdar alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government has failed to maintain law and order and is selectively acting in favor of one community while ignoring others.
"Mamata Banerjee is creating an atmosphere of fear among Hindus in Bengal. It seems like she wants to create a Bangladesh-like scenario here. This kind of politics will not be tolerated," said Majumdar.
The comments have drawn strong criticism from the TMC, which has dismissed them as an attempt to polarize the electorate ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Senior TMC leaders accused the BJP of spreading communal tension and using divisive rhetoric for political mileage.
TMC MP Saugata Roy responded, stating, “Such remarks are not only factually wrong but dangerous. The BJP is trying to disturb communal harmony in West Bengal for electoral gains.”
Political analysts have observed that such statements are part of a broader strategy by parties to mobilize their voter base, especially in districts with mixed religious demographics. Murshidabad, with its significant minority population, has become a politically sensitive region in recent years.
The Election Commission of India has so far not commented on the matter, but civil society groups have urged political leaders to refrain from making inflammatory remarks during the election period. Calls for maintaining peace and communal harmony have been echoed by various social organizations.
While the BJP continues to target Mamata Banerjee's governance on issues such as minority appeasement and law enforcement, the TMC maintains that its government is committed to the welfare of all communities, regardless of religion.
As political campaigning intensifies in West Bengal, this incident adds to a growing list of war-of-words between rival parties, setting the tone for a charged electoral battle in the state.
