In a dramatic moment during a parliamentary session, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bansuri Swaraj took direct aim at the Congress party, invoking the controversial National Herald case. The daughter of late BJP stalwart Sushma Swaraj, Bansuri delivered a fiery speech that captured national attention.
Holding up her handbag during her speech, she symbolically referenced the alleged financial irregularities linked to the National Herald newspaper and the Congress leadership.
"This bag is not just a bag — it's a symbol of what was taken from the people of India," she declared, accusing the Congress of converting public resources into personal assets under the pretext of running a publication.
The National Herald case, which revolves around the transfer of assets from the newspaper to a company reportedly controlled by senior Congress leaders, has long been a political flashpoint. Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are among those who have faced legal scrutiny in connection with the matter.
Swaraj’s remarks immediately drew strong objections from the Congress benches, with senior leaders raising points of order and accusing her of lowering the dignity of Parliament with what they called “theatrics.” However, Speaker Om Birla allowed her to continue, urging all members to maintain decorum.
The BJP MP continued by stating that the people of India were well aware of “dynastic politics” and “corruption dressed up as public service.” She alleged that institutions like newspapers, which should function as public watchdogs, were instead used to cover up financial dealings for political families.
"Journalism was meant to speak truth to power. But what we saw with National Herald was power misusing journalism to shield its truth," Swaraj said.
Outside Parliament, the BJP backed Bansuri Swaraj’s statements, calling them a “strong voice of accountability.” Party spokespersons reiterated that the Congress must explain the financial handling of assets related to the National Herald trust and company.
Meanwhile, the Congress dismissed the speech as a political stunt and accused the BJP of trying to divert attention from real issues such as unemployment, inflation, and governance failures.
Political analysts noted that such fiery exchanges signal the growing political temperature in the run-up to the 2024 general elections, with both parties sharpening their narratives.
In summary, Bansuri Swaraj’s speech not only reignited the National Herald debate but also highlighted the BJP’s strategy of targeting legacy issues to corner the Congress, while portraying itself as a crusader against political corruption.
