London, United Kingdom – In a significant address to Indian-origin professionals and foreign policy observers in London, BJP Member of Parliament Samik Bhattacharya asserted that India today stands as a confident, self-reliant nation that no longer approaches international forums or nations with a "begging bowl."

His remarks were made during a public engagement organized by diaspora groups and think tanks, where discussions centered on India’s changing global role, trade relationships, and political vision for the coming decade.

“We are not at the doors with a begging bowl. We are here as equals. India wants partnership, not pity,” said Bhattacharya, referring to India’s evolving foreign policy strategy.

The MP’s statement comes at a time when India is asserting itself more strongly on international platforms, promoting its economic growth, technology sector, and geopolitical significance. Bhattacharya pointed to various recent achievements, including India's leadership role in the G20, increased defense exports, digital transformation, and infrastructure development, as evidence of the country’s confident global presence.

He also spoke about the Indian government’s emphasis on “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India), which encourages domestic innovation, industrial growth, and reduced dependence on foreign imports. According to Bhattacharya, this policy has resonated both at home and abroad, building respect for India as a nation that charts its own path rather than following external models.

The MP took questions from the audience, including concerns about democracy, media freedom, and minority rights in India. Bhattacharya responded by stating that democratic institutions in India remain robust and that differing opinions are part of a vibrant political discourse. He also noted that critics abroad often misunderstand or misrepresent internal matters without full context.

During the event, Bhattacharya also acknowledged the vital role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening India’s global image and fostering international relationships. He urged overseas Indians to act as cultural and economic bridges between India and their countries of residence.

“You are India’s voice abroad. Your success is part of India’s story,” he told the gathering.

Analysts have noted that statements like Bhattacharya’s reflect a broader strategy by Indian leaders to redefine the nation’s global narrative—from that of a developing aid recipient to an emerging power and reliable partner in global affairs.

The London event concluded with discussions on India’s role in global climate initiatives, strategic alliances with countries like the UK and the US, and opportunities for technology collaboration in AI, space, and cybersecurity.

Samik Bhattacharya’s assertive message not only targeted international perception but also aimed to instill pride among Indians worldwide, reaffirming that India is no longer pleading for a place at the table but claiming it with credibility and strength.
