Kolkata:
A fresh political controversy erupted on Monday after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released what it claims is a leaked chat conversation between two Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs, suggesting internal discord within the ruling party in West Bengal. The chat, allegedly between senior party members, includes a cryptic reference to a “versatile international lady,” sparking speculation and debate on social media and news platforms.
In the purported screenshots shared by BJP leaders on X (formerly Twitter), one TMC MP appears to question the motives and rising influence of another party figure, describing her as a “versatile international lady.” BJP leaders have called the chat evidence of “cracks in TMC’s unity,” accusing the party of covering up internal rivalries while projecting a united front in public.
BJP spokespersons claimed the leak reflects the growing dissatisfaction among TMC leaders and alleged it points to “factionalism” and power struggles within the Mamata Banerjee-led party. They further demanded that the TMC clarify who the message refers to and whether disciplinary action would be taken against the MPs involved.
In response, TMC leaders dismissed the alleged chat as doctored and politically motivated, accusing the BJP of manufacturing controversy to divert attention from pressing public issues like inflation, unemployment, and the misuse of central agencies. “This is a cheap trick. BJP has nothing substantial to offer, so they are resorting to fake screenshots and WhatsApp gossip,” said a senior TMC leader.
While the authenticity of the chat remains unverified, the incident has reignited debate around transparency, digital privacy, and the use of social media for political mudslinging.
Political analysts suggest that such incidents—true or not—could impact public perception, especially during the pre-election period when parties are trying to consolidate their narratives and voter bases.
The Election Commission has not yet commented on the matter.
