The Emergency, declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, resulted in widespread curtailment of civil liberties, censorship of the press, and mass arrests of opposition leaders.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized the Congress party for its observance of June 25 as a “Black Day,” marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed in India in 1975. Calling the move politically motivated, the BJP claimed that the Congress is attempting to rewrite history and use it as a tool for present-day political messaging.

Union Minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad addressed a press conference in New Delhi, stating that the Congress has no moral right to speak on democracy after imposing the Emergency, which was one of the darkest chapters in Indian political history. “Congress is using the Emergency anniversary not as a moment of reflection, but as a tool to generate sympathy and deflect criticism of its current leadership,” Prasad said.

The Emergency, declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, resulted in widespread curtailment of civil liberties, censorship of the press, and mass arrests of opposition leaders. BJP leaders argued that instead of accepting responsibility for past actions, Congress is attempting to appear as a champion of democratic values.

The BJP further claimed that the Congress party’s renewed focus on historical events like the Emergency is a desperate attempt to remain relevant amid its declining political presence across the country. “Congress is nervous about the growing public support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA government. This is why they are bringing back old issues to the forefront,” said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra.

In contrast, Congress leaders defended the move, stating that the observance is meant to raise awareness among younger generations about the importance of democracy and constitutional rights. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted that the Emergency should serve as a “reminder of what happens when authoritarian tendencies go unchecked.”

Political analysts note that both parties have been using historical narratives to bolster their respective political agendas. With the 2024 general elections still resonating in political discourse, both the BJP and Congress are attempting to frame the national conversation around values of democracy, governance, and history.

Meanwhile, various opposition parties expressed mixed reactions. Some extended support to Congress’s initiative to highlight democratic challenges, while others viewed it as a symbolic gesture with limited impact.

As political tensions continue to rise, the BJP’s strong reaction indicates the sensitivity surrounding the issue of the Emergency and its relevance in modern political discourse. Observers believe that both the Congress and the BJP are preparing the ground for ideological positioning in the run-up to future elections.

The issue has reignited debates around civil liberties, historical accountability, and political messaging in India. While the Congress sees the observance as a lesson from history, the BJP views it as a politically charged tactic aimed at undermining the current government.
