The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) prohibit West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from undertaking future foreign visits. The demand comes after the BJP accused Banerjee of making statements abroad that allegedly tarnished India's global image.

During her recent international visit, Mamata Banerjee reportedly made remarks that the BJP claims misrepresented India's economic and political progress. BJP leaders have criticized her for speaking against the central government on foreign soil, arguing that such comments undermine India's reputation at a global level. They have called for the MEA to take immediate action to prevent her from making similar statements in the future.

A senior BJP leader stated, "It is unacceptable for an elected representative to criticize India on an international platform. Such remarks damage our nation's image and mislead the global community." The party emphasized that leaders must act responsibly while representing India in foreign countries.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), however, has strongly defended Mamata Banerjee, dismissing the BJP’s accusations as politically motivated. TMC leaders argue that the West Bengal Chief Minister merely highlighted ground realities and did not make any statements that could harm India’s global standing. They further alleged that the BJP is attempting to suppress opposition voices by restricting their international engagements.

Political analysts believe that this controversy is a reflection of the larger political rivalry between the BJP and TMC, particularly with the 2024 general elections approaching. The demand for banning Banerjee’s foreign visits has added another layer to the ongoing political tussle between the two parties.

While the MEA has not yet responded to the BJP’s request, the issue has sparked a heated debate in political circles. Whether the ministry will take any action remains to be seen, but the controversy has once again highlighted the increasing friction between the ruling party and opposition leaders over India's international image and political discourse.
