The political atmosphere in Bihar heated up as workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged demonstrations in Gaya, Danapur, and several other towns following the National Democratic Alliance’s call for a five hour bandh. The protest was organized in response to alleged abusive remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by leaders of rival political parties.
From the early hours of the day, BJP cadres took to the streets, raising slogans and blocking roads in support of the bandh. Shops and commercial establishments in some areas downed shutters as a precaution, while vehicular movement slowed down on major routes. In Gaya and Danapur, groups of workers marched through marketplaces, urging people to join the protest and condemning what they described as derogatory language used against the prime minister.
The bandh was called by the NDA as a symbolic show of opposition to the comments made by leaders of rival parties during recent political exchanges. BJP leaders claimed that the remarks against Prime Minister Modi reflected a dangerous trend of lowering the standards of political debate. They accused the opposition of resorting to personal attacks instead of engaging in constructive discussions on governance and development.
The five hour bandh, although limited in duration, had a noticeable impact on daily life. Public transport was disrupted in several districts, with buses and autorickshaws keeping off the roads in areas where protests were intense. Many schools and coaching centers remained closed due to safety concerns, while commuters faced delays in reaching workplaces. Railway services, however, continued largely unaffected, though some trains ran late in areas where protests spilled onto tracks.
In Patna, senior BJP leaders addressed the media, stating that the bandh was meant to send a strong message that the party would not tolerate disrespect towards the prime minister. They called upon opposition parties to maintain civility in political discourse and warned that repeated use of abusive language could provoke stronger reactions from the people.
Police and district administrations across Bihar made elaborate security arrangements to manage the bandh. Additional forces were deployed in sensitive areas to prevent violence or damage to public property. In Gaya, Danapur, and parts of Patna district, police personnel were seen patrolling in large numbers, ensuring that demonstrations remained peaceful. Authorities reported that the bandh passed without major incidents, though traffic disruptions were significant.
The NDA’s move to organize the bandh also sparked reactions from opposition parties, who accused the ruling alliance of diverting attention from key issues facing Bihar, such as unemployment, rising prices, and law and order challenges. They claimed that calling frequent protests or shutdowns does little to address the real problems of the people.
Political analysts observed that the bandh highlights the escalating tension between the ruling NDA and opposition parties in Bihar ahead of upcoming electoral battles. While the immediate trigger was the alleged abuse directed at Prime Minister Modi, the protests are seen as part of a broader effort by the BJP to mobilize its cadres and consolidate support across the state.
As the bandh ended, normalcy gradually returned to Gaya, Danapur, and other affected towns. However, the political debate over language, respect, and accountability in public life is expected to continue, shaping the tone of campaigns and discourse in Bihar in the months ahead.
