BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari has raised serious concerns about women’s safety in West Bengal, following a recent rape case reported in Kolkata. Addressing the media, Bhandari launched a scathing attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, alleging administrative failure and inadequate law enforcement measures to protect women in the state.

The incident in question, which occurred in a central Kolkata locality, has triggered widespread outrage. The victim, a young woman, was allegedly assaulted in a public area, raising alarm about the safety of women in urban spaces. Police have confirmed an investigation is underway, and one suspect has been detained for questioning.

Pradeep Bhandari accused the state government of neglecting law and order responsibilities and claimed that such incidents have become common in Bengal. “West Bengal is no longer safe for women,” he said. “The government is focused on political battles while women are left vulnerable. It is the duty of any elected government to ensure that citizens feel safe, especially women and children.”

Bhandari further alleged that the police often delay action in cases involving politically sensitive matters, and called for a fast-track investigation. He urged the state administration to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly and impartially. He also criticized what he described as a “culture of silence” surrounding crimes against women, demanding more transparency and accountability from government officials.

In response, the Trinamool Congress dismissed the BJP leader’s comments, stating that the party is committed to protecting the rights and safety of all citizens, including women. A senior TMC spokesperson said, “The government has taken prompt action in this case, and the law will take its course. We do not believe in politicising crimes, especially those involving women’s dignity.”

The TMC also pointed to several women's welfare schemes launched by the state government in recent years, including awareness drives and helplines, while accusing the BJP of using sensitive issues for electoral gains.

Women’s rights activists have called for a broader discussion on the safety of women in public spaces, not just in West Bengal but across the country. Many have demanded better street surveillance, faster legal processes, and sensitisation of law enforcement personnel to handle such cases with urgency and empathy.

Meanwhile, protests have erupted in some parts of Kolkata demanding justice for the victim and stronger measures to curb crimes against women. Civil society groups and student organizations have submitted memoranda to local police stations calling for greater accountability and security in the city.

As the investigation continues, public pressure is mounting on the administration to deliver swift justice and improve mechanisms to prevent such crimes in the future. The incident has once again brought the issue of women’s safety to the forefront of political and public discourse in West Bengal.
