Kolkata: The West Bengal Assembly witnessed high drama on Tuesday after the Speaker announced the suspension of a BJP MLA, triggering strong protests from opposition members. The decision led to chaotic scenes, with BJP legislators raising slogans and demanding a rollback of the suspension.
According to sources, the suspended MLA was allegedly involved in a heated exchange with ruling party members, following which the Speaker took disciplinary action. However, BJP leaders have termed the move as "undemocratic" and accused the ruling TMC government of stifling the opposition's voice in the legislative process.
The situation escalated as BJP MLAs stormed into the well of the House, raising slogans against the government. In a show of solidarity, the entire opposition staged a walkout, claiming that the suspension was politically motivated and aimed at silencing dissent.
Meanwhile, TMC leaders defended the Speaker’s decision, stating that the BJP MLA’s behavior was unruly and violated the decorum of the House. They asserted that necessary action had to be taken to maintain order and discipline.
This latest confrontation adds to the ongoing tension between the TMC government and BJP opposition in the state. With political friction continuing to rise, the opposition has vowed to take up the issue with the Governor and launch protests outside the Assembly in the coming days.
