Chidambaram has publicly condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, describing them as “terribly wrong” and misleading.

Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has publicly condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, describing them as “terribly wrong” and misleading. Speaking to the media, Chidambaram expressed deep concern that the Prime Minister’s comments misrepresented the events that occurred during one of India’s deadliest terrorist attacks.

The 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, which took place in November 2008, involved a series of coordinated terrorist strikes carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives. The attacks resulted in the deaths of over 170 people, including civilians, law enforcement officers, and security personnel, and left a lasting impact on national security policies in India.

Chidambaram highlighted that the Prime Minister’s remarks downplayed the intensity of the attacks and overlooked the bravery and sacrifices of police, National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, and other security forces who responded to the crisis. “The statements made today distort the historical record and disrespect the memory of those who laid down their lives defending the nation,” Chidambaram said.

He further criticized the government for politicizing the discussion around the attacks, stating that national tragedies should not be used as a platform for political messaging. Chidambaram stressed that accurate representation of events is essential for both public understanding and the dignity of the victims’ families. He also called on the administration to acknowledge the heroism of officers such as the NSG commandos and Mumbai Police personnel who risked and sacrificed their lives to contain the attacks.

Political analysts have noted that Chidambaram’s response reflects broader concerns within opposition parties that certain government narratives may attempt to oversimplify or reinterpret historical events for political purposes. The comments come amid ongoing debates in the Parliament and media regarding the role of various government agencies during national crises.

Chidambaram also urged for a more balanced and factual approach to public discourse on terrorism and national security. “While it is natural for leaders to comment on events of historical significance, care must be taken not to misinform the public or diminish the heroism of security personnel,” he added.

The 26/11 attacks, which targeted prominent landmarks such as the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and several other locations, remain a poignant reminder of the threats faced by India from global terrorist networks. Survivors, families of victims, and law enforcement officials continue to commemorate the events annually, emphasizing resilience, courage, and unity in the face of terror.

Chidambaram concluded by urging all political leaders to uphold historical accuracy, respect the sacrifices of security forces, and maintain a non-partisan approach when discussing tragedies that have shaped India’s national security landscape.

The criticism from Chidambaram underscores the continuing sensitivity surrounding the 26/11 attacks and reflects ongoing scrutiny of political narratives surrounding historical events in India.
