Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has raised serious concerns over the upcoming Lok Sabha delimitation process, warning that it could significantly reduce the number of parliamentary seats allocated to Tamil Nadu. He described the situation as a "sword of delimitation hanging over our heads," emphasizing that the process could unfairly disadvantage southern states, including Tamil Nadu, which have effectively controlled population growth.
Speaking at a political gathering, Stalin pointed out that the delimitation exercise, based on population data, may lead to states with higher population growth gaining more representation, while states like Tamil Nadu, which have successfully implemented family planning measures, may see a reduction in their parliamentary seats. He strongly argued that good governance and responsible population control should not be punished with reduced political representation.
Stalin called for unity among all political parties in Tamil Nadu to oppose any unfair changes in the delimitation process. He stressed that this issue is beyond party politics and affects the state's long-term influence in national decision-making. The Chief Minister also suggested forming a Joint Action Committee of Tamil Nadu MPs to strategize and present a united front against any unfavorable delimitation measures.
Political analysts believe that this warning from Stalin highlights a growing concern among southern states regarding political representation at the national level. If the proposed delimitation changes are implemented, Tamil Nadu could lose crucial parliamentary seats, impacting the state's ability to voice its concerns effectively in Parliament.
As discussions on delimitation continue, Stalin has urged the central government to adopt a balanced and fair approach that ensures states with strong development policies are not penalized. He reiterated that Tamil Nadu will not remain silent on this issue and will take all necessary steps to protect its rightful representation in the Lok Sabha.
