In a recent development, the Congress party has accused the Nagaon district administration in Assam of obstructing its political activities by denying permission for a scheduled meeting at Hatipukhuri, Rupahihat. The meeting, initially planned for 10 a.m., faced delays as party workers were reportedly barred from participating, leading to a rescheduled start at 12 p.m. Heavy security was deployed in the area during this time.
Congress Member of Parliament Rakibul Hussain, who was en route to attend the meeting, expressed concerns over the administration's actions. He stated, "It is just a general meeting of our party. But the way the administration tried to prevent us from holding the meeting shows how Himanta Biswa Sarma is scared of us." This incident follows a recent attack on Hussain by unidentified miscreants, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against 22 individuals and the subsequent arrest of 10 suspects.
The Congress party has interpreted these events as indicative of a broader pattern of political suppression in the region. Party leaders argue that such actions by local authorities undermine democratic principles and hinder legitimate political discourse. They have called for an impartial investigation into the matter to ensure that political activities can proceed without undue interference.
This incident is not isolated. In a related event, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was denied permission to visit the Sri Sri Sankardeva Satra in Nagaon district, as well as from holding a meeting in the Morigaon district. These actions have sparked debates over the freedom of political movements and the role of administrative authorities in regulating such activities.
As the situation develops, the Congress party continues to advocate for the protection of democratic rights and the facilitation of free political expression in Assam.
