The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee is set to resume seat-sharing talks with its alliance partner, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, within the next week, TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai said. The announcement signals a move towards resolving electoral arrangements ahead of the upcoming elections in the state.
According to Selvaperunthagai, the decision to restart discussions follows a positive and constructive meeting between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and DMK MP Kanimozhi. He said the meeting helped create a favourable atmosphere for formal negotiations and reaffirmed the commitment of both parties to continue their alliance.
The Congress leader expressed confidence that the party would be able to secure its desired number of seats during the talks. He added that seat-sharing discussions are a routine part of alliance politics and will be conducted in a cordial and transparent manner. Selvaperunthagai stressed that both parties share a common political vision and have worked together effectively in previous elections.
The development comes against the backdrop of recent political tension within the alliance after sharp remarks made by a DMK MLA against the Congress. The comments had sparked speculation about possible strains between the two parties. However, senior leaders from both sides have played down the issue, indicating that differences of opinion would not affect the broader alliance framework.
Selvaperunthagai said such statements should not be viewed as a reflection of the relationship between the two parties. He noted that alliance politics often involves disagreements, but these are usually addressed through dialogue and mutual understanding. He emphasised that the Congress and DMK remain committed to working together for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.
The Congress has been a long-standing ally of the DMK and is part of the broader opposition alliance in the state. Over the years, the two parties have coordinated closely on electoral strategy and governance issues. Party leaders believe that early discussions on seat-sharing will help avoid confusion and ensure better coordination at the grassroots level.
Political observers note that seat-sharing talks are a crucial step in finalising election preparations, as they determine campaign strategies and candidate selection. The outcome of these discussions will be closely watched, especially in the context of evolving political dynamics in Tamil Nadu.
As the talks begin next week, both parties are expected to focus on maintaining alliance unity and presenting a cohesive front to voters. Leaders from the Congress and DMK have reiterated that their shared goal is to strengthen the alliance and address key issues affecting the state.
