The Congress party has announced the appointment of senior leaders D K Shivakumar, Bhupesh Baghel, and Bandhu Tirkey as senior observers for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections. The move is seen as part of the party’s strategy to strengthen its organisational presence and election preparedness in the northeastern state ahead of the polls.
According to the party’s official communication, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader D K Shivakumar, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, and Jharkhand Congress leader Bandhu Tirkey will oversee key aspects of the party’s election campaign in Assam. As senior observers, they are expected to coordinate with state leaders, monitor campaign activities, and provide strategic inputs to the party’s election machinery.
The appointments follow the recent decision by the Congress leadership to name Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the chairperson of the party’s screening committee for Assam. The screening committee plays a crucial role in the candidate selection process by evaluating potential candidates and recommending names for Assembly constituencies. With these appointments, the Congress has indicated its intent to intensify preparations well ahead of the election schedule.
Assam is expected to witness Assembly elections for its 126 constituencies in March or April. The state has been a key battleground for the Congress, which is aiming to regain ground after recent electoral setbacks. Party leaders have been holding meetings and consultations to assess ground-level conditions and strengthen coordination among district and block-level units.
In addition to internal organisational efforts, the Congress is also part of a broader opposition alliance in Assam. Several opposition parties have come together with the aim of contesting the Assembly elections collectively to present a united challenge. Discussions are ongoing regarding seat-sharing arrangements and joint campaign strategies.
Political observers note that the appointment of senior leaders from different states as observers reflects the party’s focus on deploying experienced leadership to manage the complex political dynamics of Assam. The observers are expected to assist in resolving organisational issues, boosting cadre morale, and ensuring effective implementation of campaign plans.
The Congress leadership has emphasised the importance of disciplined campaigning and coordination among alliance partners. As the election schedule approaches, the party is likely to announce further organisational changes and campaign programmes to strengthen its position in the state.
With the Assembly elections drawing closer, political activity in Assam is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with parties stepping up outreach efforts and finalising their electoral strategies.
