A political dispute has erupted between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over allegations concerning a $21 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Initially, claims suggested that these funds were allocated to influence voter turnout in India. However, recent reports have clarified that the grant was intended for a project in Bangladesh, not India.
The controversy began when U.S. President Donald Trump referenced information indicating that USAID had allocated $21 million for "voter turnout" in India. This statement led to a political storm in India, with the BJP accusing the Congress of benefiting from foreign funds to influence elections. In response, Congress leaders demanded an apology from the BJP, alleging that the ruling party was using this narrative to divert attention from its own history of utilizing foreign funds to destabilize previous Congress-led governments.
Further investigation by The Indian Express revealed that the $21 million in question was actually allocated by USAID in 2022 for a project titled 'Amar Vote Amar' (My Vote is Mine) in Bangladesh, aimed at enhancing voter participation there. This finding contradicted earlier claims and prompted Congress leaders to criticize the BJP for spreading misinformation without verifying facts.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera highlighted the BJP's alleged hypocrisy, pointing out that several BJP leaders, including Union Minister Smriti Irani, have had associations with USAID in the past. Khera emphasized the need for the BJP to introspect before making baseless allegations against others.
In light of these developments, the Congress has demanded a white paper on USAID funding and its utilization in India, urging the BJP to clarify its stance and apologize for misleading the public. The party asserts that the ruling party's narrative was an attempt to divert attention from its own controversies related to foreign funding and influence.
This episode underscores the importance of accurate information and verification, especially concerning sensitive topics like foreign funding and electoral integrity. As political parties engage in blame games, the need for transparency and accountability in disseminating information to the public becomes paramount.
