Congress Criticizes BJP Over GST Slowdown, Claims India Trapped in 'Low Growth, Low Wages' Cycle

The opposition party has argued that the BJP government’s economic policies have failed to stimulate growth and have instead resulted in stagnation, with wages remaining low for the average worker.

Congress has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over the slowdown in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collection, accusing the ruling party of steering India into a "low growth, low wages" cycle. The party's criticism comes amid growing concerns over the country's economic performance, with several economic indicators pointing to a slowdown.

According to Congress leaders, the declining GST revenue signals a deeper issue with India's economic health, particularly in relation to job creation, wage growth, and overall economic activity. The opposition party has argued that the BJP government’s economic policies have failed to stimulate growth and have instead resulted in stagnation, with wages remaining low for the average worker.

The Congress has also criticized the government for its inability to address the challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are among the hardest hit by the slowdown in GST collections. The party claims that many businesses are struggling due to the government’s economic mismanagement, which has led to lower production, higher unemployment, and decreased consumer demand.

"The government's handling of GST has led to a loss of confidence in the economy. Businesses are facing difficulties, and the common man is bearing the brunt of this mismanagement," said a Congress spokesperson during a press briefing. The party also pointed out that despite the slowdown in GST collections, the government has failed to announce any concrete measures to address the economic distress faced by various sectors.

The Congress has also suggested that the BJP's focus on high-profile initiatives such as "Make in India" and "Startup India" has not translated into tangible benefits for the average citizen. While these initiatives have garnered international attention, they argue that the ground-level impact on employment and wages has been minimal.

In response, BJP leaders have defended the government’s economic policies, asserting that GST is a reform that has brought greater transparency to India’s tax system. They also claim that the economic slowdown is a global phenomenon, exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and not solely a result of the government's policies.

The ongoing debate over GST and economic management has once again highlighted the differences between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, as both parties gear up for upcoming elections. With inflationary pressures, unemployment, and wage stagnation continuing to dominate discussions, the economic narrative is likely to play a significant role in shaping the political discourse in the coming months.

As India struggles with these economic challenges, both political parties are likely to continue to clash over the effectiveness of the government's economic policies and their impact on ordinary citizens.

The party claims that many businesses are struggling due to the government’s economic mismanagement, which has led to lower production, higher unemployment, and decreased consumer demand.
