New Delhi: The Congress party on Wednesday criticized the central government following remarks by a United States official regarding India purchase of Russian oil. The opposition questioned the government response after a statement from the White House press secretary suggested that the United States had permitted India to temporarily purchase oil from Russia.
The issue gained attention after comments made by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during a media briefing. While describing India as a good actor in the international energy market, she reportedly used the term permitted while referring to India purchase of Russian oil. The statement was later highlighted by Congress leaders who raised concerns about the wording used in the remark.
In a message posted on the social media platform X, the Congress party criticized the government and questioned why there had been no immediate response from Indian authorities. The party said the use of the word permitted in reference to India energy purchases could be interpreted as undermining the country sovereignty and independence in making its own economic decisions.
Congress leaders stated that India is a sovereign nation and has the right to determine its own energy policies based on national interests. They argued that such comments from foreign officials should be addressed through diplomatic channels to ensure that India position and independence are clearly communicated.
The party also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what it described as silence on the matter. According to Congress leaders the government should publicly clarify India stance and ensure that the country dignity and sovereignty are respected in international discussions.
India has continued to purchase crude oil from Russia since the beginning of the Russia Ukraine conflict. The government has repeatedly stated that its energy policies are guided by national interest and the need to ensure affordable fuel supplies for the country large population and growing economy.
Officials in the Indian government have previously explained that energy security is a key priority and that India purchases oil from multiple international suppliers depending on global market conditions and availability. The government has also emphasized that such decisions are made independently based on economic considerations.
Relations between India and the United States have strengthened in recent years across several sectors including trade defense technology and strategic cooperation. At the same time India has maintained a balanced foreign policy approach by continuing engagement with various global partners including Russia.
Political analysts note that statements by foreign officials can sometimes trigger domestic political reactions as parties debate issues related to foreign policy and national interest. Opposition parties often raise such matters in order to question the government approach and seek greater transparency in diplomatic affairs.
The Congress party said it expects the government to provide clarity on the issue and ensure that India sovereignty and dignity are fully respected in international communication.
The discussion highlights the continuing political debate in India regarding foreign policy decisions energy security and the country role in global economic and diplomatic relations.
