The Congress party has issued a pointed criticism of the Narendra Modi-led central government, alleging that India is now struggling diplomatically with what it described as the "CAP" challenge – referring to China, America, and Pakistan. In a recent press conference, senior Congress leaders questioned the government's foreign policy direction and accused it of weakening India's international standing through inconsistent and reactive diplomacy.
The statement from the opposition party comes amid rising tensions with China along the Line of Actual Control, complicated trade dynamics with the United States, and ongoing cross-border concerns involving Pakistan. According to Congress leaders, India’s engagement with all three nations has become strained due to the government's failure to adopt a balanced, proactive foreign policy.
Congress spokespersons pointed to the continuing standoff with China in eastern Ladakh, highlighting that territorial issues remain unresolved even years after the initial confrontation. They questioned the government’s silence on key developments and accused it of not being transparent with the public on matters of national security.
With regard to the United States, the Congress party raised concerns about India’s shifting trade relations and the lack of clarity on long-term strategic goals. The recent diplomatic incidents and trade disagreements, they claimed, have raised questions about the consistency of India’s foreign policy approach. They argued that while strategic alignment with the US is important, it must be pursued without compromising India’s independent global voice.
On Pakistan, Congress leaders claimed that despite repeated promises of tough action, the Modi government has failed to implement a clear and effective strategy. They referred to continued incidents of ceasefire violations and security threats as evidence of a policy that lacks direction.
The “CAP” remark was intended to underline what Congress described as the central government’s inability to maintain stable and effective diplomatic relations with key global powers. Senior leaders stated that the government’s approach is overly focused on optics and headline management rather than long-term interests.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has responded by dismissing the Congress remarks, defending its foreign policy as robust, assertive, and in line with national interests. BJP leaders highlighted recent agreements and summits involving India, claiming that the country’s global profile has risen significantly under Prime Minister Modi. They accused Congress of playing politics with sensitive national matters and undermining India’s position on the world stage.
Foreign policy experts remain divided on the matter. While some believe India has made gains through strategic partnerships, others argue that the country must exercise greater caution and consistency in its global dealings. The debate continues as India navigates an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
The Congress party has indicated that it will continue to raise this issue in Parliament and during public outreach campaigns, making foreign policy a key point of contention in the upcoming political discourse.
