The Indian National Congress has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government over their alleged silence regarding the repeated mistreatment and harassment of Indian students in the United States. According to the party, there has been a worrying rise in incidents involving Indian students being subjected to unfair treatment, including racial profiling, visa-related issues, and even legal harassment, yet the government has not taken any strong diplomatic steps to address the matter.
Congress Questions Government’s Silence
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, senior Congress spokespersons claimed that Indian students studying in the US are facing increasing levels of stress and uncertainty due to discriminatory practices and inadequate support systems. They accused the Modi government of prioritizing optics and foreign visits over the welfare of Indian citizens living abroad, particularly students who contribute significantly to India’s image and remittance economy.
The party also criticized the Ministry of External Affairs for what it called a “passive response” to student concerns. “When our young students are facing difficulties in foreign nations, the government should speak up and act. The Prime Minister’s silence is unacceptable,” said Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.
Recent Incidents Raise Alarm
Although the Congress party did not cite specific cases in its statement, there have been media reports and social media posts indicating a rise in incidents involving Indian students in the US. These include episodes of racial bias, difficulties during immigration checks, and delayed assistance from Indian consulates when students faced emergencies.
Student associations abroad have also raised concerns about delays in communication and lack of support from Indian diplomatic missions in handling legal or medical emergencies involving Indian nationals.
Demand for Diplomatic Intervention
Congress leaders have called for immediate intervention by the Indian government, including diplomatic discussions with US authorities to ensure the protection of Indian students’ rights and dignity. They suggested that the government should establish a dedicated helpline and strengthen consular support in major cities abroad where Indian student populations are high.
The party also urged the External Affairs Minister to release an official statement and detail steps taken so far to address the growing concern. “The lives and future of thousands of students are at stake. This cannot be ignored,” said Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate.
Political Fallout
The remarks by the Congress have added fuel to the ongoing debate on India’s foreign policy and the Modi government’s handling of overseas Indian affairs. While the BJP is yet to issue an official response to the Congress’s criticism, analysts believe the issue could become politically sensitive, especially with increasing student migration and public focus on diaspora welfare.
As pressure mounts, it remains to be seen whether the government will respond formally to the concerns raised or continue with its current diplomatic posture.
