Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a recent social media post, asked why the Prime Minister has remained quiet on “diplomatic challenges that are now becoming visible to the world.” He further said that the government is choosing photo opportunities and ceremonial visits over meaningful engagement with international stakeholders.

The Congress party has publicly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what it describes as a "worrying silence" on issues related to India's foreign policy. In a press briefing and a series of statements made by top leaders, the opposition party claimed that Indian diplomacy is showing signs of erosion and raised concerns over how recent international events are being handled by the central government.

Congress leaders pointed out that India, which once maintained a balanced and respected global presence, now appears to be facing challenges in maintaining its influence on the international stage. Without naming specific countries, they hinted at recent tensions in bilateral relations and global forums where India’s position has been either sidelined or weakened. They expressed concern over what they perceive as a lack of strategic clarity from the Ministry of External Affairs and from the Prime Minister himself.

Congress spokespersons alleged that despite growing international developments impacting trade, security, and foreign alliances, the Prime Minister has not offered any formal or public reassurance to the Indian people. They argued that this silence has contributed to uncertainty regarding India’s stance and credibility in global politics.

The party also questioned recent foreign policy decisions, suggesting that some moves appeared reactive rather than strategic. It raised concerns over missed opportunities to engage with global powers in multilateral settings, calling for a revival of India’s active diplomatic tradition.

Meanwhile, the BJP responded to these claims by dismissing the criticism as politically motivated. A senior BJP official stated that India’s diplomatic relations remain robust and active, citing recent agreements and high-level meetings with several nations as proof of continued global engagement. The official also pointed out that diplomacy requires discretion and that not every engagement or negotiation is meant for public disclosure.

Still, the Congress insists that transparency is essential in matters that affect national interest and India's image abroad. The party has urged the Prime Minister to directly address Parliament and the public on the government’s foreign policy goals and strategic direction.

This exchange between the ruling and opposition parties comes at a time when geopolitical dynamics are shifting rapidly, and many countries are reassessing their diplomatic priorities. As India seeks to establish itself as a major global power, critics argue that clear communication, strategic leadership, and accountability are more important than ever.
