New Delhi, April 29 — The Congress party on Monday sought to distance itself from controversial statements made by certain leaders following the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the death of 26 people. The party leadership clarified that the remarks were personal opinions and did not reflect the official stance of the Congress party.
Addressing a press conference, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated, “The Congress party strongly condemns the Pahalgam terror attack. Any statements that may appear to politicize the incident are individual opinions and should not be seen as representing the party's view. We stand firmly with the nation during this hour of grief.”
Several Congress leaders had publicly criticized the government's handling of internal security, sparking backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other political observers. The BJP accused Congress of politicizing a national tragedy and undermining the morale of the armed forces. In response, Congress emphasized that it remains committed to the nation's security and the welfare of its citizens.
"The fight against terrorism is not a matter of political competition," said Ramesh. "It is a collective national effort. Congress has always stood for the unity and integrity of India and will continue to do so."
The party’s decision to disassociate from the controversial comments comes amid rising political tensions in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. Many within the Congress party reportedly urged the leadership to take swift action to avoid further political fallout and focus instead on supporting national security efforts.
Sources within Congress indicated that an internal advisory has been issued to senior leaders and spokespersons, urging them to exercise caution while commenting on sensitive national security issues. “We must avoid statements that can be misinterpreted or that provide an opportunity for political opponents to question our commitment to national interest,” a senior Congress leader said on condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile, the government has assured that thorough investigations are underway to identify and neutralize the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack. Security agencies have been put on high alert across Jammu and Kashmir to prevent any further incidents.
Public opinion has largely favored a unified response from all political parties to acts of terrorism. Several civil society groups and commentators have urged leaders across the political spectrum to rise above party lines and work together to strengthen national security.
As political debates continue, Congress’s attempt to control the narrative highlights the sensitivity surrounding issues of terrorism and national defense. Observers believe that maintaining a responsible tone during such crises is critical to preserving public trust and ensuring national solidarity.
Congress has reiterated that it will continue to raise relevant questions on policy matters through appropriate parliamentary forums while maintaining respect for national sentiment and the sacrifices of security forces.
