The Indian National Congress has finalised candidates for 40 Assembly constituencies in Assam as part of its preparations for the upcoming state elections. The decision was taken during a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee held on Friday. According to party sources, senior leader Gaurav Gogoi is likely to contest from the Jorhat Assembly constituency.
Gaurav Gogoi currently serves as a Member of Parliament from the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency and is also the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. He holds the position of Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, making him one of the prominent faces of the party at the national level. His possible entry into the state Assembly election is being viewed as a significant political move aimed at strengthening the party’s position in Assam.
Sources indicated that the party will release its first official list of candidates after the Election Commission announces the schedule for the Assembly elections. The Congress leadership is expected to field a mix of experienced leaders and new faces as it seeks to expand its support base in the state.
In the most recent general elections, Gogoi retained the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat with a decisive margin. He secured 7,51,771 votes, defeating his nearest rival Topon Kumar Gogoi, who received 6,07,378 votes. The margin of victory stood at 1,44,393 votes, reflecting strong electoral support in the constituency. His performance in Parliament and active engagement in political debates have contributed to his visibility within the party and among voters.
Gaurav Gogoi came into national prominence in August 2023 when he initiated a no confidence motion against the government led by Narendra Modi. The motion generated extensive debate in Parliament and brought him attention as a key opposition voice. His leadership role in legislative matters has strengthened his profile within the Congress party.
Political observers believe that his candidature in the Assembly polls could energize the party’s campaign in Upper Assam. The Jorhat constituency is considered politically significant, and a strong candidate could influence voter perception in neighboring areas as well. The Congress is expected to focus on regional development, employment, and governance issues as part of its election strategy.
The Assembly elections in Assam are anticipated to witness a multi cornered contest, with major national and regional parties actively preparing their campaigns. As the Election Commission finalizes the poll schedule, political activities in the state are likely to intensify.
The Congress leadership has stated that it remains committed to presenting a strong alternative and engaging with voters on key issues affecting the state. Further announcements regarding candidate nominations and campaign strategies are expected in the coming weeks.
