New Delhi: Senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party Sonia Gandhi, and Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi, paid homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary at Shakti Sthal in the national capital on Thursday.
The leaders offered floral tributes at the memorial site, which stands as a symbol of Indira Gandhi’s enduring legacy and service to the nation. Congress workers and supporters from across Delhi gathered to participate in the remembrance ceremony, reflecting on the late leader’s significant contributions to India’s political and social development.
Indira Gandhi, who served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984, is remembered as one of the most influential figures in Indian politics. Known for her decisive leadership, she played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s global standing and promoting economic self-reliance through initiatives such as the Green Revolution and nationalization of banks.
Speaking at the event, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted Indira Gandhi’s courage and vision. He said that her dedication to the country’s unity and progress continues to inspire generations of Indians. “Indira Gandhi was a leader who stood firm in the face of challenges and worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people. Her sacrifices for the nation will always be remembered,” Kharge stated.
Rahul Gandhi, who also paid floral tributes at the site, shared his reflections on social media, noting that Indira Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and national integrity continues to guide the Congress Party’s principles. He described her as a leader who “stood tall against adversity and put India’s interests above everything else.”
Sonia Gandhi, who was also present at the ceremony, remained silent during the homage but interacted briefly with party members gathered at Shakti Sthal. Many Congress workers chanted slogans praising Indira Gandhi’s leadership and legacy.
Various Congress leaders across the country also organized events and remembrance meetings to mark the occasion. In several state capitals, party units paid floral tributes and held discussions on Indira Gandhi’s policies and their impact on India’s socio-economic progress.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by her own bodyguards at her residence in New Delhi. Her death marked one of the darkest chapters in India’s post-independence history, followed by widespread violence. Despite controversies surrounding her tenure, she remains a defining figure in India’s journey as a democracy.
Every year, political leaders, supporters, and citizens visit Shakti Sthal to remember her contributions and reaffirm their commitment to the ideals she stood for—national unity, social justice, and self-reliance.
