On the occasion of the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior party leader Rahul Gandhi visited Veer Bhumi in New Delhi to pay their respects. The leaders offered floral tributes at the memorial site, remembering the contributions of Rajiv Gandhi to the nation. The event was marked by a solemn atmosphere as party members and supporters gathered to honor the late Prime Minister.
Rajiv Gandhi, who served as the sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989, was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, during an election campaign. He remains one of the most influential political figures in India’s recent history. His vision for a modern and technologically advanced India laid the foundation for several reforms in the telecom and IT sectors.
Mallikarjun Kharge, while speaking to the media, said that Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership brought a new direction to India, particularly in areas like information technology, education, and youth empowerment. "He had a dream of a modern India. His policies on decentralization and Panchayati Raj institutions strengthened grassroots democracy,” Kharge said.
Rahul Gandhi, the son of Rajiv Gandhi, also shared a message on social media earlier in the day, reflecting on his father’s legacy and the values he stood for. He mentioned that Rajiv Gandhi's vision still inspires millions across the country and that the Congress party continues to uphold his ideals.
The commemoration was attended by several senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other Members of Parliament and party workers. Floral tributes, moments of silence, and prayer offerings were part of the event, which was observed with dignity and respect.
The Congress party, every year, observes May 21 as a day to remember Rajiv Gandhi's service and sacrifice. In addition to the Delhi event, tributes were paid at various Congress offices across the country. Party units organized memorial events, seminars, and social service activities in his memory.
Political analysts note that Rajiv Gandhi’s legacy remains significant in Indian politics. His efforts to bring computers and telecommunications into the mainstream, at a time when India was still hesitant about technological advancements, marked a major turning point in the nation’s development path.
As India reflects on the contributions of its former leaders, the annual tribute to Rajiv Gandhi serves not only as a remembrance of his leadership but also as a moment for the Congress party to reconnect with its ideological roots. The event at Veer Bhumi was a reminder of the former Prime Minister’s enduring impact on the nation.
