The Congress has announced nationwide state level protest marches against the FIR registered against party leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in connection with remarks he made about a reported purification ritual in Haldwani, Uttarakhand.
The political controversy began after a religious ritual was reportedly conducted at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani on August 11, several days after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public meeting at the venue on August 8. The incident subsequently triggered a political dispute between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Rahul Gandhi later criticised the reported ritual during a press conference in New Delhi on August 29. He alleged that the incident reflected caste based discrimination and demanded that an FIR be registered against those responsible under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act.
Following Gandhi’s remarks, a complaint was submitted against him by Amit Kumar, a resident of Haldwani and a member of the Valmiki community. The complaint alleged that Gandhi had given a caste based interpretation to the ritual and that his remarks had hurt the sentiments of members of the community.
Uttarakhand Police subsequently registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi at Haldwani City Kotwali. According to police and media reports, the case includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act. Police have said that an investigation into the matter is underway.
The complainant has maintained that members of different sections of society, including members of the Scheduled Caste community, participated in what he described as a cleanliness drive and religious ritual. He has also claimed that the event was not connected to Mallikarjun Kharge’s caste.
The Congress, however, has strongly criticised the registration of the FIR against Rahul Gandhi. The party has described the action as an attack on constitutional values and social justice. Congress leaders have also demanded that those responsible for the reported purification ritual should face legal action.
Congress general secretary K C Venugopal announced that party workers would hold protest marches across the country. The protests are aimed at opposing what the party describes as an attack on Rahul Gandhi and the principles of social justice protected by the Constitution.
The Congress has also demanded that an FIR be registered against those allegedly responsible for the ritual at the Haldwani venue. Party leaders have argued that the incident should be investigated and that appropriate legal action should be taken if any law was violated.
The BJP has taken a different position on the controversy. According to reports, BJP leaders have defended the ritual by arguing that the venue had been left littered following the Congress rally. They have also rejected the Congress’s allegations that the incident was connected to caste discrimination.
The dispute has therefore developed into a wider political confrontation between the two major national parties. The Congress has linked the controversy to issues of caste discrimination, social justice and constitutional values, while the BJP has rejected those allegations and defended its position regarding the incident.
The FIR against Rahul Gandhi has added another dimension to the controversy. Since an investigation is now underway, the allegations made by both sides remain subject to the outcome of the legal process. The registration of an FIR itself does not establish guilt, and the allegations against Rahul Gandhi will have to be examined by the investigating authorities.
The controversy also comes at a time when political parties are continuing to debate issues concerning Dalit rights, social equality and constitutional protections. Congress leaders have used the Haldwani incident to highlight what they describe as continuing concerns about caste based discrimination.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier called for legal action against those involved in the reported purification ritual. He argued that the incident should be viewed in the context of the constitutional principle of equality and the prohibition of untouchability. His remarks subsequently became the basis of the complaint that resulted in the FIR.
The Congress has now decided to take the issue to the streets through state level demonstrations. Party leaders have said that workers across the country will participate in the protests and raise demands concerning the FIR against Rahul Gandhi as well as the reported Haldwani ritual.
The protests are expected to intensify the political debate surrounding the case. The Congress is seeking action against those it believes were responsible for insulting Mallikarjun Kharge, while the complainant in the Rahul Gandhi case has argued that Gandhi’s remarks themselves caused offence to members of the Valmiki community.
