Congress Questions PM Modi Over Trump’s New Ceasefire Claim, Alleges Damage to National Honour

This marks what Congress described as the “36th such claim” made by Trump during or after his presidency, raising questions about the accuracy of these assertions and the Modi government’s silence on the matter.

The Congress party has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over former US President Donald Trump’s recent statement claiming he played a role in brokering a ceasefire involving India. This marks what Congress described as the “36th such claim” made by Trump during or after his presidency, raising questions about the accuracy of these assertions and the Modi government’s silence on the matter.

Congress spokespersons argued that repeated claims by Trump undermine India’s diplomatic credibility and raise concerns about the government’s handling of sensitive international issues. They alleged that by not refuting these statements publicly, the Prime Minister is allowing the country’s honour to be compromised. The party demanded that PM Modi break his silence and clarify whether there was any truth to Trump’s remarks.

According to media reports, Trump, while addressing a gathering in the US, claimed once again that he personally intervened to prevent a major conflict between India and another nation. While Trump did not name specific details in his latest statement, previous claims have referred to tensions between India and Pakistan. Congress leaders said such declarations, if false, should be categorically denied by the Indian government to maintain the country’s dignity.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated that this was not the first time Trump had made such assertions and accused the Modi government of being evasive. He said that the absence of a clear response gives the impression that foreign leaders can speak for India without consequence. “Our foreign policy cannot be conducted through silence, especially when national honour is at stake,” he remarked.

The controversy comes at a time when political discourse in India is already heated, with opposition parties accusing the ruling BJP of lacking transparency in foreign affairs. Analysts note that the issue has the potential to become a flashpoint in the run-up to future elections, as it touches both on diplomatic accountability and national pride.

Trump’s history of making high-profile and often unverified claims about his role in global affairs has been well-documented. However, Congress maintains that India, as a sovereign nation, must counter any narrative that misrepresents its actions or policies. The party has also questioned why the Ministry of External Affairs has not issued an official statement in response to the latest claim.

Political observers say that while Trump’s comments may be aimed at bolstering his own political standing in the US, they have clear implications for India’s image on the world stage. Opposition leaders believe that failing to address the matter could weaken India’s position in future diplomatic engagements.

As the debate continues, calls are growing for the Prime Minister to issue a direct clarification. For now, the matter remains a politically charged issue, with the opposition framing it as a question of national dignity and the ruling party maintaining silence.
