Congress Questions PM Modi’s Claims of Close Ties with Trump After Tariff Move

The party’s criticism stems from Modi’s past claims that his government maintained a close and effective rapport with global leaders, including Trump.

The Congress party has strongly questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated claims of a special personal relationship with former United States President Donald Trump, following recent developments that have cast doubt on the effectiveness of such diplomatic assertions.

Addressing the media, senior Congress leaders pointed to the recent announcement by the US government under Trump’s influence that introduced a steep 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports, particularly coffee. While the tariff directly targets Brazil, Congress alleges that such protectionist policies are a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Trump-era trade practices and raise concerns about how India might be affected by similar future decisions.

The party’s criticism stems from Modi’s past claims that his government maintained a close and effective rapport with global leaders, including Trump. Congress spokespersons stated that the Prime Minister’s statements on international platforms, which portrayed a uniquely strong personal bond with Trump, now seem hollow as US policy decisions continue to follow America-first interests without showing consideration for friendly nations.

The Congress party argued that despite showcasing strong optics during events like the "Howdy Modi" rally in the United States and the "Namaste Trump" event in Ahmedabad, those public displays of camaraderie have not translated into tangible strategic or economic advantages for India. Instead, they suggest that the government focused more on image-building than actual diplomacy or negotiation.

Congress also pointed out that India continues to face multiple unresolved issues in its trade relationship with the United States, including ongoing discussions on tariffs, intellectual property, and market access. The party emphasized that these issues require robust institutional engagement rather than personal-level relationships.

Further, Congress leaders warned that relying on personal diplomacy alone may harm India’s long-term foreign policy objectives. They advocated for a stronger institutional framework that can withstand changes in global leadership and policy shifts.

In their statement, Congress leaders urged the Modi government to focus on safeguarding India’s economic interests through consistent engagement, rather than promoting one-on-one diplomacy that does not always yield results. They questioned whether India had received any concrete trade or strategic advantage from the much-publicized relationship between Modi and Trump.

The party also highlighted the need for transparency in foreign policy and called on the government to inform Parliament and the public about its current strategy to deal with emerging trade challenges and geopolitical uncertainties.

Meanwhile, the BJP has not yet responded formally to Congress’s remarks. However, sources close to the ruling party maintain that international diplomacy is complex and not defined solely by individual policy decisions. They argue that India continues to enjoy strong bilateral ties with the United States across sectors including defense, technology, and education.

As political discourse sharpens ahead of elections, the focus is increasingly turning toward foreign policy accountability and whether claimed achievements have translated into real-world benefits for India and its citizens.

The party also highlighted the need for transparency in foreign policy and called on the government to inform Parliament and the public about its current strategy to deal with emerging trade challenges and geopolitical uncertainties.
